Turmeric is a rhizome and part of the ginger family. Known for its vibrant yellow-orange color and earthy, slightly bitter flavor, turmeric is a vital spice for cooking. Used throughout India and Southeast Asia, turmeric adds vibrant color to dishes - most notably, curries. It's a wonderful addition to soups, stews, bean dishes and tomato-based sauces. We use turmeric extensively in the Teaching Kitchen and as a blending ingredient - including our Garam Masala.
Turmeric is also prized for its potential health benefits due to its active compound, curcumin. While turmeric's use as a wellness product may be fairly recent news in the U.S., it's been used this way for centuries throughout the world. Turmeric is known for its anti-inflammatory properties. It can be added to smoothies or blended into a functional drink called Golden Milk. Try it in our Summer Peach Smoothie with Turmeric and Cinnamon.
