Tea Meetup: Masala Chai and Coconut Chai

Chai tea is a big subject in the shop. The combination of warm spices seems to be a favorite for so many. We stock several Chai teas, and we love them all. Read on for an exploration of two of our favorites. While Masala Chaiand Coconut Chai share spiced flavors, they are on the opposite end of the spectrum when it comes to caffeine. Masala Chai contains a fair amount of caffeine while Coconut Chai is completely caffeine free. Here are a few important tips...

  • Masala Chai: Steep 1 heaping teaspoon in very hot water-almost at the boil-for 1-3 minutes. Although everyone's preference is different, we do find ourselves steeping this tea more toward the three minute mark. While there are no rules, we do feel Masala Chai is best enjoyed hot. We reach for milk and sweetener, although some find it sweet enough on its own.

    • Coconut Chai:Steep 1 heaping Tablespoon in very hot water. Herbals don't have any time or temp rules when it comes to steeping. You can use full rolling boiling water with no concerns. Steep for at least 5 mins. Herbal teas also cold steep really well. In a 4 quart pitcher, pour cold water over 1/3 cup Coconut Chai tea. Steep overnight in the fridge. Enjoy this smooth cold brew with a splash of almond milk. Sublime.
